Our Workplace Violence Prevention in the Healthcare Industry (Title 8, Section 3342) training course is intended for hospitals and facilities that are “organized, maintained, and operated for the diagnosis, care, prevention, or treatment of human illness, physical or mental, including convalescence and rehabilitation and including care during and after pregnancy, or for any one or more of these purposes, for one or more persons, to which the persons are admitted for a 24-hour stay or longer.”  Workplace violence in healthcare training is an important and required part of employee safety training in the health services industry.

 

Risks Lie Beyond Their Reported Statistics

Statistics show that there are many instances of employees in the healthcare industry being victims to physically injuries (and sometimes even homicides) as a consequence of workplace violence. Other repercussions unfortunately include a negative impact being made on the organization’s business operations, team morale, and brand reputation as well as unplanned financial crises that may arise through medical and legal expenses.

Based on a report released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there has been a 110% rise of private-sector hospitals experiencing workplace violence in the healthcare industry between the time frame of 2005 to 2014. Moreover, studies also showed that healthcare employees were suffering 5 – 12% higher rates of workplace violence than all workers combined when the estimate was made in 2013.

Title 8, Section 3342: What to Expect from This Course

 

This California compliant workplace violence in healthcare training is one-hour in length, and was created based on our knowledge of this law and its requirements. Title 8, Section 3342’s requirements are meant to help employers and employees become more aware that workplace violence is a prevalent issue. Its prevention requires strict enforcement of precautionary measures to maintain a safe work environment. These precautions set forth by the California Occupational Safety and Health Standards Board include training for prevention of workplace violence in healthcare to include “drug treatment programs, emergency medical services, medical transports, and outpatient medical services for incarcerated individuals in correctional and detention facilities.”

More times than not, employee lives are put at risk by their workplaces and work responsibilities. Healthcare professionals above all are considered to be the most at risk of facing the dangers posed by workplace violence when in comparison to professionals in different industries. Employers and employees will be educated about ways to recognize the warning signs for risks of workplace violence in the healthcare industry. We will touch base on the types of language and behavior that may pose as potential threats of workplace violence so they may be identified and prevented before they escalate. Examples of language and behaviors include “verbal threats, verbal abuse, yelling, pushing, kicking, hitting, stalking, and physical violence including lethal violence.

Luckily, there are ways for healthcare professionals to be proactive in their efforts of workplace violence prevention. This mandated training course will keep healthcare organizations in compliance with the rules and regulations pertaining to the state of California’s Occupational Safety and Hazard Administration (OSHA) Title 8 Section 3342 of the CA Code of Regulations.
